Description:
The Venetian fortress of Fortetsa, or 'Fortezza', is built on the rocky hill of Paleokastro, west of the present-day city of Rethymno. On this hill was the acropolis of the ancient city of Rithymna and the sanctuary of Rokkaia Artemis. Today the fortress of Fortetsa with its outer wallsThe walls of its enclosure, which are preserved intact, are the most important monument of Rethymno and a trademark of the city. The project will contribute effectively to ensure the monument and at the same time to protect the buildings located at its base and at the same time to render it for use fromensuring safe conditions for visitors. Taking into account the current pathology of the fortress and the risk of its further deterioration due to an earthquake, the weather conditions and the existing vegetation, the urgent need to prepare a relevant study for its rescue is established, dthe need for the initial drawing up of a study to fix and restore the walls was found. The study will include detailed surveying and architectural mapping of the walls and restoration proposals with the management of parasitic vegetation, geotechnical investigation for the investigation and determineof the foundation conditions, and of the materials of the embankments, checking the static adequacy of the walls and the sections that present problems as well as measures to protect it from environmental actions, evaluating on the one hand the geometric elements of the impression and the geotechnical information.
